Cyber Security: What happens when a nation that lives online is suddenly thrown offline?

A European nation in good standing with both NATO and the European Union recently suffered a series of hostile attacks on its online infrastructure. Can you name that country?

The answer is: Estonia.

And the effect was dramatic. Estonians vote online. They pay taxes online. They bank online. Government officials meet with their laptops at hand. And every citizen carries a national ID card with an electronic chip.

Vpr20061023_021_2 The July 18 meeting of InfraGard in Houston will feature a speaker who will describe the attacks, their effects on Estonians at all levels and what NATO is doing in response to the attacks. The speaker is Willis Marti, an ICHS fellow and associate director for Networking ,Computing and Information Services at Texas A&M University. The meeting is set for 2-4 p.m. at  Aramco Services, 9009 W. Loop S. in Houston.
